Our story
1958
Ronald Normington, the founding member of Normington & Sons started working in the Funeral Industry in 1958. Ron originally worked for the Co-Operative Funeral Care team in Barnsley and developed and gained valuable experience in the Funeral industry before realising his ambition to go off and setup an independent family-owned Funeral Directors in 1977. Ron’s motivation was that he wanted to provide a more personal service to bereaved families, one that was authentic and free from corporate influence.
1977
In 1977, with a family to support and limited finances Normington & Sons was born from the confines of his residence in South Hiendley, Barnsley, which is located a village away from Ryhill and Havercroft. Ron started operating using the facilities from other established family owned Funeral Directors in the Wakefield district and financing everything on a credit card.
1992
Fast forward to 1992 the first dedicated Ryhill Office located on Mill Lane was opened, this is our head office still to this day.
In 1992, Ron’s wife Jenny joined the Normington & Sons business to help undertake the clerical and administrative tasks whilst Ron was hard at work arranging funerals and supporting local families. Jenny sadly passed away in 2007.
In 1992, a dedicated chapel of rest which was opened on the old quarry in Ryhill which has since relocated and the land has now been redeveloped into a residential estate. In 2007 the chapel of rest was moved onto Newstead Lane, Havercroft which was known as ‘The Old Service Station’. The Old Service Station underwent extensive renovation work and this is at the centre of our operations still in 2023.
2001
In 2001 Ron’s son, Philip Normington joined the business and started from the very bottom. Philip started cleaning the ceremonial cars before being trusted on undertaking duties on funerals to progressing to the role of a Funeral Director. Philip has officiated thousands of funerals throughout his career and has developed a wealth of knowledge and understanding. Philip is now the owner and director of the business and continues to support local families during their bereavement.
2010
In 2010 our second chapel of rest was opened in Kinsley at The Old Baptist Chapel on Wakefield Road. This went under extensive renovation work and was opened up as our sister chapel of rest and has the same decor and feel to our Newstead Chapel of Rest. The chapel in Kinsley is used to support our local families and allow their loved ones to rest close to their residence in the Fitzwilliam and Kinsley area.
2022
In 2022 we opened our second dedicated office in Royston, Barnsley to continue supporting the families from that area and provide a safe space where people can walk in to discuss and arrange pre-paid or at need funerals for the Barnsley Region.
2023
To this day we remain a family-run and locally-orientated Funeral Directors that has helped thousands of families in Wakefield, Pontefract and Barnsley. We pride ourselves on being part of our local community, we continue to support and give back by donating to our local church, local sports teams and charities and have donated thousands of pounds throughout the years. We are a disability confident employer and believe in employing local residents to support our community.
Our dedicated team has a wealth of experience in the funeral industry and we are able to provide a truly bespoke funeral service. We believe in saving money for families at no compromise on quality, especially during the difficult financial climate.
